A 60-year-old Galway man has been jailed for 9 years for raping his younger cousin when she was a child almost 40 years ago.
The man, who cannot be named to protect his victim's right to anonymity, was in his early 20s when the abuse took place. The young girl, who was also the man's godchild, was between seven and nine years of age at the time.
A jury found him guilty of two counts of indecent assault and two counts of rape.
The rapes occurred at the young girl's family home on unknown dates between 1982 and 1984.
The man, who is now married with adult children, maintains his innocence and rejected the jury's verdict.
At sentencing today, Judge Carmel Stewart said that the man breached trust placed in him.
According to the Irish Examiner, the judge told the survivor that she hoped she could gain some closure and put the events behind her.
The publication reports that in the woman's victim impact statement, she said she kept the abuse a secret for 30 years before the truth came out in 2016.
During 1982 or 1983 the victim was on a tractor with her cousin when he indecently assaulted her before taking her to a nearby field and raping her.
The court heard that the victim "felt sick, and was in considerable pain" at the time, but was warned not to tell anyone what had happened.
On another occasion during the same summer her raped her again.
